History & Traditions

The land port at Benapole, however, started as a customs station back in 1947 with the Partition and was later upgraded over the years. In 1984, it was turned into a Customs Division, a Customs House, then in 1997 an Immigration and Customs Terminal was constructed around 2009.

Today, this port accounts for nearly 90 % of Indian goods entering Bangladesh. These include machinery, chemicals, textiles, jute products, fish, plastics, batteries, and building materials, etc.
