Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity-1 (JPBS-1) was set up in the Jessore district of Khulna division under the initiative of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) to electrify rural Bangladesh. It manages electricity through 4 zonal offices, 6 sub-zonal offices, 3 area offices, and 13 complaint centers resulting in complete coverage and timely service delivery to its consumers.

1. Electricity Connection and Distribution
Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity-1 (JPBS-1) delivers new electricity connections for homes, commercial entities and farms. This allows the consumers to apply for the connections online, making the process time efficient and smooth.
2.Online Bill Payment
Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity-1 (JPBS-1) has integrated multiple payment platforms for easy bill payments such as Rocket, bKash, UPay, MyCash etc. It enables the consumers to get their electricity bill paid sitting in the house absolutely free of cost.
3.Complaint Management
Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity-1 (JPBS-1) offers 13 centers, where consumers can turn to in case of issues. Additionally, there is a separate helpline (16899) that can be contacted for complaints or queries related to electricity for consumers.
4.Load shedding schedules and conservation of energy
The organization also releases load shedding schedules from time to time for consumers. Through JPBS-1, consumers are provided guidance in line with that provided by the government, urging people to conserve energy by switching off lights and equipment not in use during peak periods, contributing to the conservation of energy.

For example, in 2024, the organization declared vacancies for the post of ‘Meter Reader cum Messenger.’ The advertisement also invited applications from male candidates for the posts of police constables and head constables with a minimum academic qualification – SSC. Only candidates who were healthy, well-mannered and able to ride a bicycle could apply. It was a job which paid BDT 14,700 a month and there was a security deposit of BDT 10,000 to be paid.

During the summer months, notably the irrigation season, JPBS-1 becomes crucial for community empowerment by providing a continuous supply of power. The organization has urged farmers to use the irrigation pumps during the off-peak hours (11 PM to 7 AM) so that maximum utilization of the electricity could be done. It has also urged consumers to prevent illegal connections and unnecessary usage of electrical appliances, apart from creating awareness about safety and reduction in power bills.
